Additional Skating Opportunities

There are many ways for people both young and old to participate in figure skating. There are opportunities for adults to test and compete, adaptive programming for individuals with disabilities, Excel singles program for skaters not looking to compete at an elite level, high school and collegiate programs, Iceman for our male athletes to network, learn, grow, and support each other in their figure skating journey, showcase for those who love to add a bit of theatre to their skating, theatre on ice for large groups, and solo dance for skaters to perform ice dance without a partner. Here at the Skating Club of CNY we have adult skaters, excel skaters, showcase skaters, and skaters participating in solo dance. We do not currently have an adaptive program, theatre on ice, or skaters competing in high school events. More information can be found on the USFSA website.

Adult Skating

Just because you are an adult doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities for you in sport of figure skating.Adults who have never skated can take lessons in our Learn to Skate program. Skaters who would like to do more can join the club and take private lessons. There is an adult testing structure, that starts after the LTS program, that these skaters can participate in to continue their progress. Adults can also choose to compete in local competitions up through the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Championships. Returning skaters can jump back in to the testing structure. Past tests can be grandfathered in and skaters can use that level for current competitions. For more detailed information, go to the USFSA website.

Excel Program

The Excel program provides a second pathway for singles skaters wishing to compete without having to train at a level reserved for those skaters whose goal is to go to the Olympics. USFSA has brilliantly provided this path for skaters who have multiple interests with figure skating being one of them. These skaters have their own free skate events at non qualifying competitions. Skaters wishing to enter the Excel Series, will have the chance to qualify to the National Festival in July by participating in at least 2 non qualifying competitions that are part of the series. Go to the USFSA website for more information.

Iceman

USFSA’s mission of the Iceman program is to “engage more male identifying athletes within the sport of figure skating and attract new participants to the ice.” Figure skating is a female driven sport and participation in the Iceman program helps male skaters find support, friendships, and camaraderie by connecting them at events during competitions and camps. If you are a parent of a male skater, go to the USFSA website for more information.

  • Solo pattern dance
  • Shadow Dance(2 skaters skate a pattern dance side by side, no interaction involved)
  • Combined Dance(one solo pattern dance or rhythm dance and one solo free dance)
